John Brennan
Sound artist, drummer, and curator
John Brennan is a Canadian sound artist, drummer, and curator based in Vancouver on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. He has toured extensively through Europe, Japan, and North America since 2008 with several different ensembles including solo projects. Over the past 6 years, he has been expanding his work on performance and improvisation to include sound installations and sound sculptures that look into the relationship between the sonic memory of objects, the agency of objects, performance, and improvisation. In 2016, the Canada Council for the Arts funded his newest installation project titled The Temporal Drum Set. The exhibition will be featured at The No idea Festival, Suoni Il per Popolo Festival , The Western Front/Vancouver Jazz Festival and more in 2018. From 2012- 2016 John, curated and coordinated the concert series Destroy Vancouver, an experimental music and sound art series founded by Brennan in July 2012 and produced by VIVO Media Arts Centre since January 2013. This series coalesced around improvised forms of music and sound art, combining a broad range of experimental music genres and sound art aesthetics and bringing together international improvisers with local and national sound artists and avant-garde musicians. In 2016, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, DV expanded to include workshops and artists talks and showcased local, national and international artists such as Christina Kubisch, Evan Parker, Chris Corsano, Anne-F jacques, Martin Messier, Alexandra Spence (...). The four 2016 editions of DV were co-curated by John Brennan and Elisa Ferrari and reached a public of approximately one thousand attendees. Over the years Destroy Vancouver has co-produced with Vancouver Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, Vancouver New Music, Suoni Per Il Popolo among the others and has been an integral part of Vancouver’s progressive arts communities. In 2005 John graduated from Concordia University with a degree in Electroacoustics. John has performed and collaborated with the some of the world's most exciting artists including Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, William Hooker, Greg Saunier, Wally Shoup, Chris Cogburn, Peter Kutin, DJ Olive, Bill Horist, Paal Nilssen-Love, Greg Keplinger, Alexander Moskos, Josh Stevenson, Joshua Zubot, Ellwood Epps and many others.
